Bora Bora is a small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia.
Ah, Bora Bora. The stuff of dreams. As you arrive by plane, the view says it all. How not to be mesmerised by this stunning palette of sapphire, indigo and turquoise, all mixed together in modern-art abstractions? And these sand-edged motu (islets) and soaring rainforest-covered basaltic peaks? With such a dreamlike setting, Bora Bora is, unsurprisingly, a honeymooners’ choice. But there’s much more to do than clink glasses with your loved one in a luxurious hotel. The good thing is that you can mix slow-paced sun-and-sand holidays with action-packed adventures. Diving, snorkelling, lagoon tours, hiking and parasailing are readily available. What you shouldn’t expect, though, is a thriving nightlife. Bora Bora is a quiet island. And this dream destination is much more accessible than you think.
10:00am-12:30pm : Leopard Rays Trench
Enter the warm waters of Leopard Rays Trench for the chance to swim with rays and sharks. See the impressive creatures through the crystal-clear water, and step out into the lagoon--accompanied by a guide--to feed and pet the friendly animals. As they pass over the white sand at the bottom of the water you get great photo opportunities, full of contrast and clarity. The rays' gentle nature makes for an exciting experience that will win over even the timid and reluctant.
1:00pm-3:30pm : Bora Bora Romantic Tour
4:00pm-5:30pm : Alain Despert
Perched on a hill overlooking a lovely blue lagoon, Alain Despert houses works of a talented artist who finds inspiration in the bright and colorful world of the South Pacific. As you browse the exhibits and enjoy a cup of coffee, you'll find out how this world-renowned painter--with an upscale clientele of celebrities, royals, and yacht owners--ended up in Bora Bora.
10:00am-4:00pm : Matira Beach
Relax at Matira Beach, where the soft, powdery sand invites sunbathers and the clear waters offer a great spot for swimmers and snorkelers. Consider taking a jet ski out into the calm bay for a different perspective, and to view the island from the sea. Set on a more secluded part of the island, the paradisal beach is still easily accessible by car and on foot. Accommodations and restaurants provide options for extending your stay.
4:30pm-6:00pm : Paroisse Saint Pierre-Celestin church
10:00am-4:00am : Mount Otemanu
Head up to the base of Mount Otemanu, an impressive natural monument whose volcanic rock peak marks the highest point on Bora Bora. While the brittle, jagged, 727 m (2,385 ft) summit is too inhospitable to be accessed, you can hike or take a 4x4 trip up to the base of the mountain. The latter option remains the most popular, because of the jungle's density and the difficulty of the walk. Look up at the black, rugged top of the mountain (visible across the island) as it stands in sharp contrast to the lush greens and bright blues of most of the landscape.
9:30am-12:00pm : Mount Pahia
12:30pm-3:00pm : Arc En Ciel Bora-Bora
Treat yourself to a memento or buy a handcrafted gift for someone at home at Arc En Ciel Bora-Bora, a boutique jewelry shop. The ornate pieces, made on site using locally sourced black pearls (known here as "diamonds of the sea"), include bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Let the skilled and attentive staff help you find a piece for a special occasion, or one that suits your personality and can be worn on a daily basis. The large collection of attractively displayed jewelry includes a wide variety to suit a range of tastes and budgets, all certified as authentically Tahitian.
10:30am-1:00pm : White Valley
1:00pm-3:30pm : Tupitipiti Point
10:00am-2:00pm : Off-Road Tours
2:30pm-5:00pm : Bora Bora Turtle Centre
Swim with some of the most enigmatic of all sea creatures at Bora Bora Turtle Centre, an organization committed to caring for, rehabilitating, and rewilding turtles. Let the guides tell you about the behavior, habitat, and cultural importance of these animals, in an eco-friendly and educational environment. Swim with them, feed them, and watch as rehabilitated turtles are released back into the wild. The chance to pet and get close to these majestic creatures provides ample photo opportunities, and a fun, meaningful experience for people of all ages.
